Make a category

With SEOshop, your online store's navigation is based on categories. This enables you to organize your product range clearly and conveniently. Before filling the 'shelves' of your online store, we recommend to reserve ample time for dividing your range in categories that are logical to your customers. This will allow them to quicker find what they are looking for and increases your turnover opportunities.

Creating main categories

Research has shown that good online stores employ a maximum of seven main categories, with each of them possessing a clear and to-the-point name. This ensures an easy-to-read navigation. Per category you can create three different page types: product, overview and text pages.

Product pages

These pages are shown to your customers when they browse through products in your store. A product page contains a short description of the product in question, an image that may be zoomed in on (to see is to buy), as well as the possibility to add products to the cart. Creating product pages goes as follows:

  1. Navigate to CATALOG > Categories in the left menu of the back office.
  2. Click the green plus icon in the navigation at the top of the screen to create a new category.
  3. Select Main category in the drop-down menu and choose the Products.
  4. Enter a category name with Title English. Make sure it's short and to the point.

Overview pages

Overview pages show all sub-categories placed underneath a main category. Below an overview page, you can place another one as a sub-category. Note: Overview pages cannot be placed underneath a product or text page.

  1. Navigate to CATALOG > Categories in the left menu of the back office.
  2. Click the green plus icon in the navigation at the top of the screen to create a new category.
  3. Select Main category in the drop-down menu and choose Overview.
  4. Enter a category name with Title English. Make sure it's short and to the point.

Text pages

These pages can only contain text (including layout). Use them to for example gen up your customers about your online store, general terms and conditions and/or disclaimer or payment and shipping methods. It is not possible to create sub-categories underneath a text page.

  1. Navigate to CATALOG > Categories in the left menu of the back office.
  2. Click the green plus icon in the navigation at the top of the screen to create a new category.
  3. Select Main category in the drop-down menu and choose Text page.
  4. Enter a category name with Title English. Make sure it's short and to the point.

Sub-navigation under the main categorie

Like the main navigation, sub-navigation is also based on categories, as follows:

  1. Navigate to CATALOG > Categories in the left menu of the back office, for an overview of your existing categories.
  2. Click the green plus icon in the navigation at the top of the screen to create a new category.
  3. Now click on the Sub-category of in the drop-down menu to select the menu-item above. Levels below are indicated with a minus sign (-).
  4. In the Type field, select the Products or Text option.
  5. Enter a sub-category name with Title English and click Save.

You can create sub-categories up to three levels of depth. Do you want to use more levels? Use overview pages instead.

Edit categories

  • Visibility – Tick the Include in catalog checkbox if you want to make the category in question visible in your online store.
  • Do not index– This prevents Google and other search engines from indexing this page. Activating this option will make it impossible to find this page through search engines
  • Type– Change a product category into an overview page, or vice versa.
  • Image – Click Edit to add an image to a category.

Languages

  • Title– Enter the category’s title here. It will be displayed in the menu.
  • Long title– Enter the long title here. It will be listed on the category page.
  • Description– This field is the same as the meta description and can be left blank.
  • Meta title– This title is the category link in search engines. Use a maximum of 70 characters, including spaces.
  • Meta description– Provide a brief category description here. The meta description will be listed underneath the link, as a page description. You can use a maximum of 160 characters, including spaces. Make sure the text has a natural flow and do not merely paste keywords after each other.
  • Keywords – These are words used to tell something about a category. Big search engines such as Google no longer use keywords; however, we recommend to always enter them. You can use a maximum of 250 characters, including spaces. Use commas to separate keywords.
  • Content – Tell your customers more about the category in question. This information will be visible in the online store. Write this text yourself. Unique content is important, it increases the findability of products and your online store.

Products tab

You can add products to a category by clicking a tag and subsequently clicking the Products tab at the right at the top of the screen.

Use the search bar to search for products you want to add to a category and add them by clicking the green plus icon at the top of the screen. Products can be removed from a category by clicking them and subsequently clicking the Delete selected button at the right at the bottom of the screen.
